Sivota – Parga – Acherontas

Syvota is a picturesque village in the coastal line of the Ionian Sea, in Thesprotia. it is only a half-hour drive from the main city of Thesprotia, Igoumenitsa, and it is the best-known resort in the region.

Syvota is built in a idyllic landscape: verdant hills around an enchanting bay, islets that remind of Norwegian fjords, crystal-clear waters and spotless beaches justify fully that Syvota is a centre of attraction for thousands of tourists from Greece or abroad every day.

Syvota is known since antiquity, as historic research associates the islets in the bay of Syvota with the Syvotia islands. Thucydides says were the field of a sea battle between the Corinthians and the Corcyraeans in 433 BC, in the years of the Peloponnesian War.

Parga is an ideal destination, famous for its unique ambiance. It’s a traditional settlement, amphitheatrically built, with a scintillating view and remarkable natural beauty.

The city is built in the outskirts of the Venetian Castle and its architecture visibly obeys the Ionian style. The view from the castle to the sea, the amazing coves and the evergreen islets of Virgin Mary is undoubtedly breathtaking. Paved narrow streets, traditional alleys, cozy neighborhoods filled with flowers and traditional taverns add a magical and sensational flair to this idyllic place. The city however is modern and vigorous, harmonically absorbing and illustrating the past.

You can explore it by following the hiking trails and by walking and touring its neighborhoods. You will also enjoy a boat ride to all the nearby beaches and especially Lichno, where you can tour the geographically interesting caves. The city lies in the Ionian Sea and it’s located about 68 kilometers northwest of Preveza and about 50 kilometers southeast of Igoumenitsa. Administratively, it belongs to the Prefecture of Preveza and it’s in the southwestern corner of Epirus, near the River Acherontas, and across from the beautiful islands of Paxoi and Antipaxoi.

Acherontas river is in Epirus. It rises in the Souli mountains and empties into the Ionian Sea, after an almost 60 kilometers flow. Acherontas is a very impressive water mass and ancient Greeks believed that the entrance to the Kingdom of the Underworld, Hades, sterted from it’s sources, because of it’s imposing appearance. Today, the visitor will find a bright green area flown through the river at the sources of Acherontas river, near Parga. It’s a very beautiful place. You can swim, if you are although the water of the river is cold, or do rafting or horse riding. Whatever you prefer, one is for sure: you’ll be fond of Acherontas River sources.
